While I don't own a Haas VMC, I have a Victor lathe. G28 brings it to "home" position, but the Z axis will travel a full 50mm further in the positive direction. Sounds like the Haas is set up the same way. I'm guessing that G91 G28 Z0 will always lift the head if it is below the G28 (home) position. I think your stuck with this setup on the Haas.
